How to Use Search I

  • enter the search string in the transliterationof Greek characters provided. As you type, the searchstring may appear in either Greek or English letters, depending on which browser you are using; this should make no difference to the performanceof the searching facility.
  • ignore accents and breathings.
  • the search is case sensitive: a search for κρατης will find Δημοκρατης but not Κρατησιππος The exception is digamma (6). To find names beginning with digamma, type '^6'.

It is possible to refine the searching in a variety of ways. The searching mechanisms are those of the UNIX environment, and anyone familiar with these should be able to adapt the searching to their needs. For those not familiar with UNIX, here are a few useful tips:

. is the single wild card character: e.g. Μ.τρ will find names in Ματρ-, Μετρ-, Μητρ-, Μιτρ-.

* specifies one or more missing letters: e.g. Μ.*τρ will find names such as Μνασιστρατος and Μοιρεστρατος , as well as all those that would be found by Μ.τρ.

$ (realised in Symbol font as $) specifies the end of the word: e.g. κρατη$ (or κρατη$) will find names ending in -κρατη , and avoid those ending in -κρατηςΜ.*ος$ would find all names that begin with Μ and end in -ος. Μ.τρ...$ would find names in Ματρ with just three letters following the rho.
