The Checking Database
The LEXCHECK database contains the authorised lists of information that are controlled in the LGPN volumes. Table 12 lists the tables and their content. The information in this database is updated by an Ingres Application-by-Forms (ABF) program. Each user has a username and password and is assigned an authorization level, so that some may only look at the data, others add, while still others may also change and delete information. When any changes have been made to this database, the relevant tables are unloaded to data files for the checking programs to use.
There were originally two versions of each checking program, one which
used data unloaded to temporary data files, and another which used the
LEXCHECK database directly. It was found that the programs using
the database were considerably slower than those which used the data files.
As a consequence it was decided to abandon the slower programs, but still
retain the database as a useful means of restricting alterations to the
data, so ensuring consistency.
