Stage I: Data Capture


The first stage involves the transfer of information which has been compiled on large numbers of record slips (see Fig. 1) into computer files of the form illustrated in Fig. 11 (the "|" indicate continuation lines). Although basically a typing task, the Greek names need to be transliterated and the various conventions outlined above have to be followed regarding format, abbreviations and structure. Also some of the entries may need a certain amount of interpretation.

The data for Volume 2 was actually prepared in Australia Note 3 and once ready was sent to the UK by electronic mail, in a format very similar to that already used in the production of Volume 1. The amount of data took up just over five megabytes of disc store. Volume 3 is being prepared in Oxford, and currently takes up just over six megabytes of disc store.
