The Data Transformation Process

There are two distinct computer-based data transformation phases. The first converts the original data files into a form that can be loaded directly into the database. The second unloads that data but in a form that can be used by a typesetting program. As previously mentioned volume one was produced from an IDMS database in a format specific to the OUCS laser composer. This paper describes the process used in producing volume 2.

The production of the second volume of the LGPN can in fact be divided into six stages as shown in the flow chart in Fig. 10. Each will be described in turn and it is hoped that this procedure can be used for subsequent volumes, and will undoubtedly be used for volume 3, which is due for publication in 1995.
